How to get planning permission in 5 easy steps

1. Check that a planning permission application is required

The planning department of your local authority will be able to help you work out how to get planning permission.

Getting in touch for an informal chat is a good early step, as you can run through your ideas with them, and they can give you a rough indication of whether your application will get approved or not.

If they say that your plans would be rejected, that doesn’t definitively mean that you’ll be turned down: sometimes it just means that you’ll need to put together an excellent and well-judged application to get an approval.

However, be aware that putting these chats together will cost money, and will need to be booked in advance.

3. Make necessary changes and submit your application

After you’ve sought out that advice, you can make changes to your application as required before you submit it to the authority.

Remember that planning permission encompasses a number of different areas, such as appearance, materials, noise, privacy, the environment, and much more besides.

4. Explore appeal options if your plans are rejected

The planning committee will assess your plans, and may speak to owners of neighbouring properties in the process. This normally takes between two and three months.

5. Start work if your plans are approved

If you get the green light from the planning committee, then you are free to start work on your project.

However, it will remain vital that your project stays within the scope of what was approved. If you have to make any changes during the build, these must not breach any planning conditions.

You may be served with an enforcement notice and forced to demolish your work if so.
